The Creek's (Muscogee)

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation comes from a culture that before the 1500s, spanned all of southeastern United States today. From here, the tribe would later evolve into a union of several tribes. This organization of tribes would be the most sophisticated political organization north of Mexico during its time period. During the period of contact with Europe, the Muscogee would be split into the upper and lower Creeks. The difference between the two is purely based on geographics. Through this, the Lower Creeks would be affected by intermarriage and other European influence with the Upper Creeks relatively untouched. However, following the American Revolution and a strive for expansion. The American government suddenly started targeting the Native American populations for moving. This meant that over the course of the 1830s, the Muscogee's had to slowly say goodbye to their sacred land and move on.

Following the Trail of Tears, everything started going wrong for the Creeks. Following the start of the Civil War, battles occurred in Native land where Confederates would attack the neutral Muscogee. Soon the Creek Muscogee would begin fighting for both sides and during the 1866 treaty, there was a mandate that the Muscogee people concede 3.2 million acres which was around half of their land. This was further worsened by allotment which didn't allow the Creek's to elect a Principal Chief without U,S. permission. Along with this, there were rumors of dissolving the Creek's but this thankfully turned out false. The Creek's had a tough time leading up until 1971 where the Nation could finally freely elect leaders without U.S. permission and also quickly made their constitution. In modern times, the Muscogee are freely asserting their rights as a sovereign state and are proud of their tribes extraordinary history.
